Well, aside from pouring sand into a shoebox...
I've made some desert dioramas in my middleschool heydays, and I found ant farms to be particularly awsome. but you need to be somewhat handy. You take out most of the sand, and then put stuff into the farm, then fill more sand in as you go. You end up like:

sandsand roadrunner sandsand cactus
sand scorpion sand lizard sandsand
sandsandsandsand toad sandsandsand
sandsandsandsandsandsand turtle sand
sandsandsand etc. sandsandsandsand
sandsandsandsandsandsandsandsand
sandsandsandsandsandsandsandsand

then you could label them on the glass or something.

Without looking up anything: In what continent is the Kalahari Desert?

Be honest. Have a guess even. It's OK if you don't know. It doesn't mean you are dumb. It just means you don't know.

In what way was the Kalahari Desert formed?

New postby Klara » 28 Nov 2009, 17:17

I have reason to believe it is sort of in "inland desert", but I'm not sure, and am having trouble with an assignment, due to the little time I've had to do it.

Your help is much appreciated!

The Kalahari Desert is part of the huge sand basin, reaching from the Orange River up to Angola, over the east of Namibia, into Botswana and South Africa. The erosion of soft stone formations created the sand masses. The red parallel dunes with wind-shaped sand ridges were stabilised through vegetation and are so typical of the landscape in the Kalahari. Unlike the dunes of the Namib Desert, those of the Kalahari are stable and not wandering. Dominant vegetation: grasses, thorny shrubs and Acacia trees.

I couldn't find monthly averages, but here is the yearly amount of rain:

"Parts of the Kalahari receive over 250 mm of erratic rainfall annually and are quite well vegetated; it is only truly arid in the south-west (under 175 mm of rain annually"
