How does a Tamarack get used when making clear plastic windows on envelopes?

This is a tough one, I know. But it is true cause I have read about this several times. My question is how is it done? is it the bark, resin, the wood the needles? I would really like to know how a tree can produce clear plastic paper.

I've been in printing for 20 years. The material that I know that is used in the window of envelopes is either Poly (EZC), Glassine, or Crystal Clear (Cello). This is according to one of the larger envelope makers in the country. I've never heard of Tamarack. Below is what I found about Glassine which is a paper and is what I believe you are talking about.

Glassine is generally translucent unless dyes are added to color the paper or make it opaque. It is manufactured by a process called calendering; after pulping and drying, the sheets are pressed through rollers such that the paper fibers flatten out facing in the same direction. In order to maximize the smoothness and thinness of the paper, glassine must go through this process several times, and so is referred to as supercalendered.

I have been tearing out the plastic window in envelopes before recycling, is this necessary?

The city requires me to separate paper and plastic into two different bins. I have been tearing the plastic windows out of envelopes (you know the kind you get from businesses) before sticking them into the paper bin. Do I even have to do this? And if I do, can I put the plastic window part I rip out into the plastic recycling bin?

In our community, they tell us that the plastic is so negligible, that's its OK to toss those window envelopes in with the regular mixed paper.

It seems that every community has a different recycling program ~ perhaps it would be best if you called your local recycling carrier and asked them directly.

In Brevard county Florida you can. They just updated their recycle guidelines... http://www.brevardcounty.us/swr/recydir.cfm

Check your local waste managment. Every area is different, but most still don't recycle as much as we could!

They are called Packing List Envelopes and/or Invoice Envelopes (depending on where you buy them.)
