Any medical coding and billing specialists here, I have a question?

I'm currently in school studying for my associate's in medical billing and coding. I'll graduate with honors in May, and at the end of this month I'll be certified in IT for Healthcare, and ICD-9. But I'm concerned because every job posting I look at wants someone with 1-5 years experience! How can I get a job in this field with no experience? Will my education put me above the other applicants. Was it hard to find a job with no experience? I do have healthcare experience, just not in coding.

Medical Coding and Billing Specialist?

New postby Sharron » 28 Nov 2009, 18:09

I have a BA in Music ( Vocal degree ) I don't want to be stuck to music for the rest of my life. I'm looking into career institutes for certifications. I was going to go with medical coding and billing specialist with administration. Is this a good choice? After this certificaion, is there anything else that I could do related to this job in the field to make myself and education worth more.

ps. I do not want to be a nurse. I can't handle the blood, and I don't want to touch people with the medical assisting. any other suggestions or what I could do if I did the medical coding program

You'll be able to get office work in a medical setting. Either in hospitals or doctor's offices. If you like desk work/computer entry, and possibly calling insurance companies, it would be good work to have as your "day job"

Your at the very bottom of your plan if you want to be a physicians assistant you have to go to an accredited college. Medical Billers and transcriptionists only handle the paperwork portion of healthcare you may want to look into being a medical assistant its more hands on dealing with physicians and patients.
