OH YEAH!! My daughter has awful allergies and we have tried everything. The BEST thing so far has been an ionization unit from Eco Quest. It uses the same technology used to clean up after 9/11.

She has improved so much since we got ours that she is off one of her (steroid) medicines! YAY!

It def. eliminates all odors too, the only down side to that is when I want to burn a smelly candle, but it is worth that one little sacrifice!! I can't say enough good things about it.

It also killed mold on the baseboard of our living room.

Here is where we got ours from:

By the way, we don't get anything at all for telling you about it -we are just happy customers!

Do Air purifiers also provide good ventilation or air...

New postby Denis » 28 Oct 2012, 06:11

Do Air purifiers also provide good ventilation or air circulation?

We have a small office and need the necessary ventilation where we lack windows and open doors. Any ideas?

The short answer is No.

If you need circulation where there are no windows I say get one of those small corner fans that fit in the top corner of a door frame to move the upper, warmer air + an oscillating floor or desk fan to circulate the air in the middle. If that's still not enough circulation you could also get a floor fan to move the air around at foot level.

It all depends on how much air you want to circulate over how big an area & what your budget is. Maybe you should just pay to have a window put in.

Air purifiers or Air conditioners to prevent traffic...

Air purifiers or Air conditioners to prevent traffic pollution coming into the house?

Hi,
my house is on a main road with heavy traffic. So there is a 1 mm of dust inside the house end of every day. To prevent this some one suggested to put airconditioners for the full house, but this will be expensive. Someone suggested that i can buy air purifiers instead can someone clarify the following?

1. if i buy airpurifier and close all windows, how much time it takes for the purifier to clean the air?
2. how frequently should i open the windows to get the fresh air(oxygen) into the house again?
3. Are there any known risks associated with air purifiers because they release a lot of charged particles/ions?

1) Depends on the purifier capacity; they generally list the size of room they are designed to keep clean as they recirculate the air in it. Generally, for a whole house, you would have one in each major room. I just keep one in my bedroom so I sleep in cleaner air.

2) Sounds like the air isn't all that fresh, really. Without AC though it will really get stale/warm if completely closed. Maybe open the windows at nights, when it's cooler, lower traffic/pollutants?

3) It depends on the purifiers. There are ones that filter using conventional filters like the ones in built-in air conditioners; you would buy replacements regularly as they fill with dust and grime. It sounds like you are talking about the ionic ones though, where you clean off the metal plates that attract the dust and other pollutants through a charge as the air passes through, instead of pulling the air through a filter.

Ionic air purifiers are cheaper to run since you don't have to replace filters all the time (though you do still have to maintain them) -- but they do produce ozone. While ozone is good in the upper atmosphere, it isn't so good at ground level; it can worsen respiratory issues like asthma and damage the lungs. I've read some reports that they don't work as well as conventional filter units at purifying air, either (Sharper Image lost a big lawsuit not long ago over this -- they were the ones who first pushed these in the US).

....hold a thin sheet of paper, or tissue paper, on each side - the paper will cling to wherever the unit is sucking in the air - has to suck air in, in order to clean it....
good luck

p.s. if unit isnt sucking in air, then it's blocked - needs fixing

Leaving on air purifiers all the time, good or bad idea?

New postby Twanda » 28 Oct 2012, 06:11

I just got a sharper image ionic breeze air purifier and was wondering if it was a good or bad idea to leave it on 24/7? Thanks in advance for the help.

I you smoke it is ok to leave them on 24/7. If you dont smoke then turn it off every now and then. Maybe run it for an hour at a time. Leave it off for 2 hours then after that turn it back on for an hour. This way your house or apartment stays fresh smelling and you wont burn out the motor or fan on it as fast.

What's your thoughts on whole house air purifiers...

New postby Clint » 28 Oct 2012, 06:11

What's your thoughts on whole house air purifiers that attatch to the furnace?

Considering getting one of these units. Don't know what to expect for cost and any pros or cons. Want to have air ducts cleaned as well, worth it? What's average price for that?
Thanks for your help.
Really didn't know there are so many different ones. Which is better, cheaper, which do you like most?

Purifiers can be a great help in removing dust that can cause allergies and also helps people with respiratory problems. The cost can range from a few Hundred to a thousand depending on how good a unit you want.

What do you know about air purifiers?

New postby Morton » 28 Oct 2012, 06:11

Looking for an air purifier. Saw one at Target that never needs a filter change-you just vaccume it when its dirty. I'd like to buy it so that I don't have to continually buy filters but will this work as well as others? Forgot the name of it but if anyone has this type can you tell me about your experience with it?

Also they all advertise that they have "quiet operation" but which ones are really quiet?

Can anyone recommend a good one?

They're wonderful for allergy sufferers. My best suggestion is to get one with a metal plate in place of a filter. Instead of pulling out a dusty mess, you rinse it underwater. That way you're not transferring the dust, pollens and mites around...you're just washing them away. Or get one of the new ones that kill mold and germs with heat and need no filters.

I got mine at Hammacher Schlemmer a few years ago. They carry the best air care products.

Does anyone know what the air purifiers are called that...

New postby Hassie » 28 Oct 2012, 08:12

Does anyone know what the air purifiers are called that use water instead of filters?

The unit has the motor on top and it sits on top of the water bowl and it swirls the water around in the bowl. You can also add fragrances to it. They showed on of them on an info-mercial.

I have one that I found on ebay that is made by Rainbow. It is called a RainMate. I really like mine. Our Pedatrician uses them in his office to clean that air. Not sure the cost if you buy from a Rainbow dealer but on ebay they run about $40. Hope that this helps!
