I have all my photos stored in a scrapbook organizer "cube" (I bought it at Target for about $25). It's about 13" x 13" by 13" and has four drawers. Each drawer is just the right size to hold 4 x 6 pictures. I have all of them arranged chronologically. They are separated by (acid free!) cards on which I have written the date (mine are by month).

If you are looking for advice on the mechanics of doing the job, I would suggest sorting first by year and then date. You could sit down first and write down events of each year (i.e., Bob's 14th birthday, trip to Disneyland) to help jog your memory. Good luck!

In Windows Gallery, I was organizing my pictures?

New postby Alan » 21 Oct 2012, 23:33

As I moved some of the pictures into folders, I noticed some blank looking folders with the extension thm. Can I delete these to get them out of the way when dtragging and dropping pictures, or are they important?

Right click on one of the folders then click on Properties. If you don't recognize anything you see in the properties dialog and you don't know what the folders are for, it's best not to delete them.

Lots of information in those links. Looks like you'd better keep them or say goodby to some of your photo information.

Are acid-free, magnetic photo albums a good choice for organizing and saving family pictures?

These albums have the pages with a sticky background and clear plastic overlay. I know in the past these type of pages used glue that could ruin your photos. Are the new ones (acid-free) OK to use? If not, what are some other suggestions for saving photos in albums?

Personally, I try my best to stay away from the magnetic albums because of the glue. It's not that the sticky isn't Acid Free. It's just that the sticky was ... well, just too sticky. Supposing there comes a time when you want to remove them to scan them in somewhere, it could be difficult to remove, almost to the point where it'd tear the photos themselves.

I've seen it happen when I worked in a one hour photo lab, it wasn't pretty. The magnetic albums may be getting better now... But personally I'd perfer not to find out.

I usually am a pretty big fan of the albums that have actual sleeves of a specific size (usually the 4x6 ones). They may be less versatile with assorted photo sizes, but removing the print is as easy as sliding it out from the sleeve. The sleeves are usually Acid Free (also called Archival), so they won't do any undue damage to your prints as well.

For a fun and creative way to organize and protect your pictures, look at creativememories.com! They have stuff to organize and albums for your photo's! You can get photo safe albums you just slide your pictures into, or they have everything you need to make really fun and personalized albums! I have used their products for years and love them! They make wonderful storage boxes that come in 2 different sizes depending on the number of pictures you have!! You should be able to find a consultant in your area on their web site or I can put you in touch with mine!

I am having some trouble organizing my pictures on files...

New postby Rodolfo » 21 Oct 2012, 23:33

I am having some trouble organizing my pictures on files on my computer.?

I know how easy but after I download them I can't find them. Maybe I have too many places to put them? They are everywhere and then if I am in a certain program like Wal-Mart digital photo manager I can't do anything with them. I tried to change all of them into MY PICTURES. It worked really well until I deleted the SHARED FILES and apparently that was not a good idea because I lost them all! Also, if anyone knows What are Thumbs? and are they important? They are everywhere but I can't open them. Sorry, but I am getting so frustrated. I would really appreciate some help.

Before you download your pictures, make a folder in your my computer, name the folder and then download or copy the pictures to the folder, Then you can go back and see that all of the pics are in the folder before ya erase them off your camera.

It doesn't look like you can change that behaviour to not have a folder.

If you open Windows Photo Gallery, which controls what you are using, you can go to File | Options.

In the options, on the Import Tab, there is the setting for folder name. There doesn't seem to be a none available.

What you could try is set the Folder Name to tag and not set a tag when you import pictures. I notice that the file name is set to tag also but I never set one and never get a tag entry on my file name. Perhaps the folder name will do the same thing.

If that doesn't work the only suggestion I have is to use autoplay's view folder and drag the pictures to where you want them. If you select the picture files, right click and drag them to a folder you'll be given the option to move which will copy them to your hard drive and then delete from your camera.

Hope that helps.
