This actually hurts your credit. You are better off paying your creditors on your own. I have listed a webpage below that has free consumer information on credit repair and a direct link to the official FTC U.S. Government webpage on repairing credit.

Has anyone ever used the services of any Consumer Credit Counseling organization?

I am in debt with school loans, past taxes, child support, medical bills, and collections from diferrent credit card companies. All this as a result of a nasty divorce and custody battle. I'm skeptical about the results these companies promises and I'm fearful of getting ripped off.

I really want to improve my situation but dont know where to start. Any information that would make it easier for me to decide whether or not it would be beneficial for me to solicit the help of these agencies would be a great start.

Thanks for all your help,

Sincerely,

Struggling Dad

CCC is reputable, but there are many "non-profit" organizations that do a very poor job and cost too much money. Check with your local banker for advice about any in your area, but CCC is respected by most banks.

These reputable agencies will negotiate a lower payment with your banks and creditors. You will pay one payment each payday to CCC, or other agency, and they will forward on your payment. They may charge a small fee, depending on your income, but you will save a lot in interest.

Some creditors will actually lower your interest to zero percent.

CAUTION-If you start with the program, keep with it. If you miss even one payment, most banks will immediately cancel their lower interest rates and start requiring higher payment.

Once you finish this program and your debts are paid, your credit score will look great because the banks will report your current payments.

If you are late on payments now, don't worry. After making 3 consecutive monthly payments the creditors will start reporting to the credit bureau that you are on time. This is all done with the arrangement that the creditors have with CCC.
