This was quite some time ago... I was xc riding at Schuss mountain in northern MI. They put the bikes on the back of the chairs that has a big hook installed. They'd stop the chair at the top letting them grab their bikes and go.

It may vary from place to place or be totally different now, 15 years later.

Killington Mountain gondolas are open then. It is a really nice ride up there is a restaurant at the top of the mountain. I go up every year because I live only about 20 minutes from killington so I go and look at the fall foliage.

Everyone has this problem at first. Right b4 you're about to get off start sitting a LITTLE sidways (don't fall off the chair!) and put your front foot foward slightly. As you feel the board hit the snow lower the board so it's flat and put your back foot all the way pressed up against your back binding. It may take practice but after that just glide down the little steep part and you're done!

Any tips on getting on and off the chairlift on a snowboard?

New postby Janise » 29 Oct 2012, 00:25

I'm still learning, but its really hard to walk up the hill every time. Do you think I could take the chairlift on only my 2nd time snowboarding?

You should definitely be able to take the chairlift. It might help to get a stomp pad to keep your back foot from slipping off the board when getting on and off. Strap in your front boot and leave your back foot out of the binding to push around. When you're in line, watch the other people get on and see when they go and what they do. To get on, start to push towards the spot where the lift picks you up. There should be a "stop here" indicator on the ground. Stop right before that. Look back and watch the chairlift come towards you. Sit onto the chairlift carefully and keep your snowboard straight, or else you will catch an edge and fall forward. Put the safety bar down and let your board hang by the front foot. Put the safety bar up when you're about 30 feet from the end. Again, keep your board straight getting off and ride down the little slope at the end. Stop when you're on flat ground at the top. Don't get discouraged if you fall trying to get on the lift, it happens all the time. The lift operator will stop the lift and let you get back on. Hope this helps!

You start with a station where poeple will board... then you build your track where you want it to go... you then have to end that track with another loading station for people to get off the ride.

Thanks for the tip.

When they're big enough to get on and off without assistance. I did it alone when I was like 10 and that was the first time I had ever been on a chairlift. =]

The key to getting off the chair is to be sure you have all your weight on your front foot. As this is the only foot firmly connected to the board it only makes sense that this be the foot you would want to invest all your attention to. And yes, I would focus a bit more energy to your toes. You don't necessarily need to be up on edge but having your weight a bit more on edge will lessen the chances of catching an edge.

Your back foot is just along for the ride. Untill you are comfortable riding one footed don't get too complicated. Don't try to stop, don't try to turn and do not take that back foot off the board. Most chair off ramps are pretty mellow and you'll coast to a stop before you need to really do anything. Another technique I employ while skating is to use my backfoot behind my heel edge while pushing instead of on my toe edge. This eliminates any twisting and you can balance a lot better.

EDIT: I hope Ace Elliot never teaches anyone I know...

"If all else fails, bring a buddy and grab onto them to help you stay up, it helps to have someone to hold yourself up on if you can't ride down"

Great technique.
