It was founded in 1916 by the architect Sherrill Whiton, and was chartered by the Board of Regents of the University of the State of New York in 1924. Since its establishment, NYSID has been fully dedicated to the study of interior design and has significantly contributed to the growth and advancement of the interior design industry. NYSID, with a population of approximately 750 students, has remained at the forefront of interior design education with a curriculum that reflects the latest developments in the interior design field. While design basics such as color theory, history of decorative arts, textiles and finishes, and technical drawing are taught in relation to residential interior design, undergraduates also learn how to design commercial spaces such as restaurants, hospitals, hotels, and offices. Whether learning the value of preserving historic design elements or mastering state-of-the-art computer-aided design programs, NYSID undergraduates are taught a wide variety of abilities and methods by instructors who are active in the design field. Having New York City as its campus, the world comes to NYSID students through the city's museums, art galleries, design showrooms, and antique dealers. The school possesses a cosmopolitan air, not exclusively because of its prime location but also because it draws undergraduates from all regions of the nation and around the world. About 10 percent of undergraduates at the school come from outside of the United States. Furthermore, many undergraduates transfer from other institutions in an effort to build a more specialized educational background. Because of its elite faculty and impeccable reputation, the school maintains a strong, active bond with the interior design industry. This creates opportunities for undergraduates to form business relationships that establish career prospects in the design field upon completion of the NYSID degree program. Sherrill Whiton, founder of the New York School of Interior Design, included the following in the school's mission statement: "The value in studying the decorative arts is not limited to its contribution toward creative effort or to the development of the imagination. A greater benefit is the cultural information that is acquired in the process. The roots of these arts entwine themselves around nearly all branches of human thought and activity, and an understanding of them will aid greatly in the development of one's ability to analyze, reason, and judge human affairs." Aside from offering three interior design major programs, NYSID also has an interior design post-professional Master of Fine Arts (MFA) degree. More Less
