The Iron Bed

What Is The Best Paint To Use For An Iron Bed?

New postby Nam » 28 Oct 2012, 14:54

I have an old Depression-era iron bed that I would like to paint, and will need to use a primer after sanding the surface. However, what is the best paint to use? I will consider both Spray-on and brush paint. Thanks!

Most important step is cleaning the surface of any loose rust - which it sounds like you plan to do. Then it is a good idea to use a product like Navel Jelly that converts any remaining red rust to a tightly adhered black oxide deposit (you can find numerous products in paint departments. Then use a good primer like Rustoleum, and finish with a compatible surface coat - it will then last a long time. I prefer spray, as it gies a nice, even coat. I used this method on old metal fence posts outside, and they looked good for a long time.

Good luck!

Call the place you bought it from. If that is not an option, try JC Penney. They sell Powell furniture products and you should be able to get some info from them.

Does anyone have complete instructions on assembling a Wesley Allen iron bed? What do I do with the washers?

I have a Wesley Allen complete bed in queen size that I've assembled but I haven't put a box spring or mattress on it yet because I don't know what to do with the washers that came with the rest of the parts. It's an iron bed with no wood anywhere in the design. Where should I use the washers? I'm looking for anyone who has assembled a Wesley Allen complete bed or who works for Wesley Allen or any store that has sold Wesley Allen and who might be able to provide some insight as to how to use these washers. Thanks.
I've scanned the instructions into my computer & I'm hosting them at Image Shack. Go here to see them. http://img85.imageshack.us/img85/2199/img054zv3.jpg

Washers ALWAYS go between bolts and metal to prevent scratching and scraping

Probably. i would then seal the metal with 2 thin coats of Rustseal so rust doesn't return...a Sandblasted surface is the best surface for RustSeal....topcoat with any paint system if you don't like the Rustseal colors...their gloss black looks very rich, wet & shiny and the satin is rich in color but more low luster. Also comes in silver, grey & clear.

If you have an ironing board it makes it a little easier.
but if you don't you can try putting a towel or something on your dinner table and iron away.

i have tried doing it in the floor but you will get more wrinkles than you want just trying to stay off of the sheet
