Dog Dna Testing

New postby Maddie » 25 Oct 2012, 22:40

Well it can if you are testing for that. Basically it can pinpoint the biggest contributors of the breed. Its very expensive and not really worth it if you are testing a total mutt.

Anyone tried Wisdom Panel MX dog dna breed tests?

New postby Shin » 25 Oct 2012, 22:41

I have been reading a lot about the Wisdom Panel MX dog dna breed test. It is supposed to use a blood sample (better than cheek swab, i know that for a fact) and it can usually tell you the breed makeup of our mutts, usually pretty accurate. I am just checking to see if anyone on here has tried this brand, or any brand for that matter, and what their results were. Thanks. If you don't know what i'm talking about, it's wisdompanel dot com.

We have these where I work.

When we first got them we wanted to try them out, so we tested an employee's dog. It came back as mostly unknown, which seems pretty pointless considering the price.

I think we've had maybe 2 clients that wanted this test, everyone else thinks it's a bit too expensive for something that's mostly a novelty.

I like the idea but we were a little disappointed in the results.

My dog is related to her dog. I know he is over two hundred pounds but, he has a glandular problem. He is the one and only true missing son of her dog. Stop trying to deny him his fortune. My lawyer said there would be people like you....Sheesh !!!

DNA testing for dogs can be used to better manage matings, make more informed selection decisions, and discover the correct parentage when in doubt.
Many veterinarians do this type of screening, mostly for breeders.
You would just have to call a local veterinarian and inquire, I am sure the costs vary, there is also information online. Test fees start at about $40.

Those Mexicans will jump anything! I once saw a stray pup that turned out to be part Chihuahua and part black Lab! The Akita was probably the mother in your case.

Didn't I just hear of DNA testing they can do to determine what breed(s) your dog is? Is this possible?

I have a mixed dog I bought from a farm and I'm sure it's part Beagle, but no one knows what breeds the mother is, nor do they even know what the father was. I'm just interested to know for breed characteristics.

It's a scam. About all they can tell you is that it's a dog. You can test for parentage, but not if the dog is a specific breed.

Dog DNA test?

New postby Hanh » 25 Oct 2012, 22:41

I have read that there is a DNA test that reveals the breeds in my dog's genetic makeup.
I would like to know how to get her DNA tested?
I don't care what breed she is, I love her so much but I am just really curious.
She resembles some sort of german shepherd/bulldog/collie!

Thanks!

I had a Collie which had 1/4 German Shepherd named Mike. He was the greatest dog. I was young when he was a puppy, 2 years old, and I was a bit rough with him and sat on him sometimes, when he grew up he did the same to me and licked my face, I had to go outside with a squirt bottle to keep from getting mauled with love, and maybe a little revenge, I don't know. My grandfather took him to Alaska and lost him : (

Anyway, the tests are valid, and it's not hard to find the difference in breeds, even the family line in a breed is discoverable.

No, they can't tell hair color yet, but they can compare dna from a known dog or any animal and have certain parts of the dna that differ according to those lines.
