Ok i used to have pet insurance on my lab... heres the deal pet insurance is a scam, if you factor in shots and your routine checkups on him, with time you end up paying far more for coverage than you would have just paying out of pocket, there was an article i read in the readers digest a few months back taling about insurance scams and pet insurance i believe was number 2 on the list, might wana look that up

I need to get health insurance for my dog and two cats. Do..

I need to get health insurance for my dog and two cats. Do you have any good suggestions?

My dog and two cats are like my children. I will do and spend whatever I can so they are in the best health and live a long time with us. However, vet bills are really expensive so I am thinking about getting pet insurance. Does anyone have any experience in this area and are able to shed light on which programs provide good coverage?

We have our policy with Pets Best and love it! Highest limits ($7000 per accident or illness) and none of this benefit schedule stuff where companies will only pay a particular amount for certain procedures. They sell themselves as a straight-forward 80% reimbursement after the deductible, and I've been hearing good things about them online from other people so feel very confident in the choice we made.

I chose the lower deductible ($75) so as to get the most back each time we go to the vet, and I took the advice of other pet owners online and made sure to sign our Aussie up before any problems start showing. (Just as with human health insurance, things that are considered pre-existing are either not covered, or only covered at a certain amount.)

We felt like we were getting the best bang for our buck with Pets Best and had heard very negative things about pet insurance in general based on some of the other companies. That was like throwing the baby out with the bath water for us. Not insuring our pets was like not insuring ourselves, as far as we're concerned. We've been through too much with previous dogs to think that the insurance isn't worth it.

and p.s. don't listen to the nay-sayers who say that it's silly to insure your pets. They obviously haven't experienced high vet bills the way we have! Fiscally, it just makes sense to have the insurance. I'd have to save for more than 15 years to come up with the $7000 that is available to me with my insurance policy right now. Hopefully I'll never have to use that, but it's available to me if we need it (and I've only spent $70 on the insurance so far -- very worth it!).

Does anyone know a good website where I can find health...

Does anyone know a good website where I can find health insurance for my dog?

My dad told me that his friend got health insurance for his dog. The poor dog just recently got leg surgery and what would've costed $6,000 only costed $30 because of animal insurance. Does anyone know where I can look for insurance for my dog. I need to get him a check- up and neutered.
Thanks 4 the answers. How do I get my dog registered at the AKC? Yes he's a purebred 2yr. old Golden Retriver. I don't have any papers from his previous owner yet.

AKC.org
Did the seller/breeder tell you the parents were AKC registered? If they were then the pup should have been sold with papers unless they sold the pup on a spay/neuter contract, and will not provide papers until pup has been altered. If the parents are not AKC registered then you can not register with AKC the only thing you can do is apply for an ILP from the AKC. The AKC website has all of this info and instruction on how, but if you do not plan on showing your dog in the breed ring(if neutered you can't anyways) or in obedience you do not need papers.

I know it is very confusing when shopping for pet insurance. There are too many information out there and cause a case of information overload.

No pet insurance are the same and you need to find one that tailors to your cat's need. You have to be careful when choosing because some insurance company place a low cap on their reimbursement even though you are paying for higher premiums. Some will have low deductibles but will not cover much illness or low coverage for accidents and diagnosis. Many insurance companies will not cover pre existing conditions.

I cannot recommend one that stood out from the rest because what my cat needs might be different from what you need.

However, there is a site with a lot of good and useful reviews on the insurance available that you can look into.

Some guidelines:-

How old is your pet? The best time to purchase a pet health insurance policy is when your pet is young. Most pet health problems happen in the last two years of your pet's life. So, the younger your pet is, the better

Is your breed prone to medical problems? While policy premiums are generally not based on breed, certain hereditary conditions are excluded.

For instance, Persian cats are prone to polycystic kidney disease (PKD). You can still buy pet insurance for your Persian; just don't be surprised if it fails to cover related issues (some pet insurance policies may cover this, so check with your provider to make sure before you buy).

Is your pet already sick? Most pet insurance providers won't cover pre-existing conditions. However, if you can prove your pet had a condition that has been cured, that may be covered.

Can you choose your own veterinarian? For many pet owners, vet choice is key, and for good reason. Some pet insurance companies require you to use veterinarians on their own network. Others don't. As always, check with your provider regarding your choice of veterinarian.

What is your pet's lifestyle? If your dog or cat spends most of his time outdoors, that will increase his/her risk of illness or injury.

What is covered? Many pet owners purchase pet health insurance policies to protect themselves from the high cost of future medical problems. Others want regular pet care such as annual physical exams and routine checkups and cleanings.

Just be advised that most standard pet insurance policies cover catastrophic accidents and illnesses. Routine vet visits tend to come as add-ons and/or riders.

What State do you Live In? If you are searching on the internet for pet health insurance, you need to check this. Just because a provider does business online doesn't mean it services your state.

Check The Insurance Company's Track Record

Every state in the U.S. has an insurance commissioner. If the insurance company you are considering has had legal/ethical issues that should cause you concern, the insurance commissioner's office in your state or province should know about it. Check with them before you buy.
