Hi there, I always recommend Cesar Millan's '"Cesar's Way''. It's a great little book to help you understand your dog. Just remember that your puppy doesn't need a 'friend' he/she needs a pack leader. Put sensible rules in place like not getting on the furniture without an invite, don't 'share' food and don't allow him to pull on the lead. And probably the best bit of advise I can give is to not allow your puppy off the lead until you have a really reliable recall - just keep calling him on the lead and give a treat when he is coming at you. Play retrieve games - on the lead you get the ball back! Have fun training Sits and Wait! Down and Come. If your pup looks to you before reacting to things then you won't have any problems. Good luck!

Try Bark Busters. I believe the site is Barkbusters.com
Its a dog training franchise that is nation wide. I used them for several dogs, and always had great success

Do you need academic school to be a dog trainer?

New postby Magaret » 29 Oct 2012, 13:39

I'm in 9th grade and I've wanted to be a protection dog trainer since I was 5. I trained my GSD to do a lot of tricks. My parents want me to be a very rich investment banker but I don't really want to. How do I become a schutzhund trainer and start my own bussiness? How old do I have to be? What is school going to do? How do I tell my parents that I want to be a schutzhund trainer?

Well, a good place to start learning now is to get your dog into good classes with a Schutzhund trainer. You have time before persuing a "proper" education and nothing wrong with learning all you can with your dog now. Maybe only do the beginning Schutzhund (level 1), which is mainly obedience, so as not to upset your parents.

Yes, you should go to school to learn to train. You need to know a lot about canine behavior & to be able to work with any dog regardless of what. I went to school for 7 months, 5 days a week, 8-10 hrs a day.

To train for basic obiedience is simple but there are things you need to know specificly about canines temperaments & how to motivate a dog to do what you want them to do. Too many people attrubite human behavior on to dogs and as a trainer you need to know canine behavior before you can train or modify a behavior. You need to learn all the learning processes and techniques and how to apply them to get the results you want.

Level-0
points- -32

Post your question in the green bar at the top and you can find more answers there. You will find answers and not loose points for asking a question. If you don't find the answer there then there isn't an answer to your question or you need to rephrase your question.

You have to know all about it before you start it. If you are one of those people who have a natural instinct for animals you might be able to get enough out of a dog training book to get you started. You have to know all about gaiting.......... there is just so much you need to know to be able to do yourself justice and the prospective dogs you will be training.

Could you teach a class on home remodeling if you know nothing about it? You have know all about what you are teaching.

Most start out as pet dog obedience trainers and animal behaviorist's then specialize in service dog skill.

Volunteering at a shelter may provide good references and connections, volunteering at as a puppy walker or puppy raiser for a established service dog group will do the same. This is not a career for the faint of heart, it requires time, dedication, schooling and most of all a love for animals. People skills are also important.

This should get you started

If you want to get a little taste, get a job at Petsmart.
they will send you to a local trainer for instruction. You can see if it's a good fit.
then explore accredited schools

MoorPark Community College in Moor Park California. http://www.moorpark.cc.ca.us/ Specailizes in animal sciences. All San Rafael Guide Dogs for the Blind trainers and employees are recruited from there, as well as employees at San Diego Zoo, Sea World, etc. . Also, if you get a Dog World magazine, they have many advertisements from training schools. I will look up some contacts and add them here in a few minutes. Her they are.this should get you started http://animalbehaviorcollege.com/index.asp?id=413 http://www.schoolfordogtrainers.com/

If you have never trained any dogs try this. Find a local dog training club. Enroll your dog in classes. Learn what it takes to be able to instruct people on training. Assist in teaching a class. Each club has different requirements to be able to teach.
The club I belong to requires that you earn a Companion Dog title on your dog to be able to teach Beginners and the next 2 levels. We then have to apprentice under approved instructors for 3 - 10 week sessions. There is an eval after each session and the training committee has to approve you at each step. Then the board votes on you.
We have folks with 30+ years experience instructing at our club with numerous titles, obedience and agility earned along the way.
Then you will have a good idea if that is what you really want to do.
