Salt Lake In High Altitude Peru Is A Result Of Sea Level...

Salt lake in high altitude Peru is a result of sea level uplift eons of years ago?

While scientists spend time, efforts and money with high risks researching deep sea for clues of universe. Why don't they try Peru's dried out salt lake which has respective life span like others in Atlantic or Pacific or even more? I think there are still lots of fossil deposits in good preservation there at the bottom of this salt lake!

Salt lakes are not the result of uplift from sea level.

There are many salt lakes around the world, such as Salt Lake, Utah; Pyramid Lake, Nevada; Lake Manyara, Tanzania; Aral Sea, Russia; and several in the Andes. Their common feature is that they are in a negative water balance, meaning that the rate of precipitation is less than the rate of evaporation. Therefore, water coming in to the lakes by rivers evaporates before it ever reaches the sea. A little bit of salt in the rivers is concentrated by the evaporative action - just like salt in the oceans but in a much more concentrated fashion.

Hope that helps!

I am visiting Peru and want to take a 3-4 day excursion from Cuzco? How is Lake Titicaca or Arequipa?

Any suggestions about either of those places or any ideas in general would be appreciated.

You can go to Puno by bus, which is quite a long trip. Puno is at an altitude of ca. 4000 m, which can make you somewhat giddy. You can walk to the shores of lake Titicaca. After 2 visits I still can't say it turned me on.However you can book a daytrip to one of the islands or arrange an overnight stay with one of the local families. If you have only 3-4 days, I would suggest you take a plane to Arequipa (approx. $100 ) and spend your time there.I stayed in a 3 star Hostel, the "Buena Vista" which was excellent. Approx. $50 p.n., b'fast incl. From the diningroom you looked directly at the volcano "Misti". You can go to the top of the roof and overlook the city of Arequipa.
The main square is very beautiful, and there are many good eatingplaces around. There is a museum where the mumy"Juanita" is on display. Well worth visiting. The altitude is good here, so you can do plenty of walking to get to know the place.

Lake Titicaca is the one you're looking for. it sits in the dormant caldera of a volcano and has the title of the worlds highest inhabited lake.

Hiya,

You will be glad to know that you are indeed right!!!

:-)

Lake Titicaca is the highest commercially navigable lake in the world, at 3,812 m (12,507 feet) above sea level. Located in the Altiplano high in the Andes on the border of Peru and Bolivia, at 16°S 69°W, Titicaca has an average depth of 107 m, and a maximum depth of 281 m. The western part of the lake belongs to the Puno Region of Peru, and the eastern side is located in the Bolivian La Paz Department.

More than 25 rivers empty into Titicaca, and the lake has 41 islands, some of which are densely populated.

Titicaca is fed by rainfall and meltwater from glaciers on the sierras that abut the Altiplano. It is drained by the Desaguadero River, which flows south through Bolivia to Lake Poopó. This accounts for less than five percent of the lake's water loss, however, the rest is caused by evaporation as a result of the strong winds and sunlight at this altitude

Hope this helps!
