If you paid it, they will send your stimulus check.

If I owe taxes will there be a delay on the other portion?

New postby Dannette » 25 Oct 2012, 13:23

I owe like 2,000 but I am getting a 6500 will it take longer to get the remainder of the money?
I did not file twice - and I filed and I still am getting money back for 2007 - I just owe 2,700 out of my refund.

If you have filed more than one federal tax return for 2006 you can expect to be contacted by the IRS very soon.

Update:

OK, so you filed your federal return and expect to get around $6,500 back. Now you say that you owe $2,700. To who? The State or Local tax? If so, the time it takes for the federal refund has nothing to do with State or local taxes as they are completely different entities.

If I owe taxes from a previous year that I'm still paying, will I still get a stimulus rebate check?

I owe taxes from last year that I'm still paying off to the IRS. Will I still get a stimulus rebate check or will the IRS keep it to put towards my balance due to them? :(

The IRS policy is to apply refunds of any kinds towards outstanding balances first, then they send you a refund check. So you will get a credit towards your previously owed taxes and if there is any left over you will get the refund.

Yes they can....and most likely...you will suffer penatlties if you did not pay them your quarterly payments (if you have set that up).

My suggestion is to speak with an IRS agent to see of reducing your penalties. I work in taxes and I know my boss meets with agents to work out settlements. I have seen where a corps or individuals may owe $150K in penalties but with the CPA's they may get their pentalities reduced to 120K. But then I do work for some of the most elite firms in the Nation.

During 2001 Tax rebates,I didn't qualify because I didn't owe taxes(full refund).Will 2008 rebate bethe same?

This is speculating whether or not the bill is passed. One artical says that as long as you make $3000 you'll get something, and another says that you have to owe at least the amount of the rebate!

To receive the rebate, you must make over $3000 in EARNED income (not social security, etc.). Then, when you file a tax return, even if you owe no taxes, you would get a $300 rebate. That's how the proposal is worded now; it hasn't been passed into law yet and could change.

Could I still owe taxes on a house after it's sold?

New postby Thea » 25 Oct 2012, 13:23

I sold my house in January but just received a letter in the mail from that town that they want me to pay taxes on the property and that they already have it on the list for tax sale if I don't pay. That's kinda funny because someone else owns the house. I thought all the taxes (sewer and water) and stuff would be all settled by the time it was closed on 7 months ago. I live in NJ by the way.

Just send the tax bill to the new owners by mailing it to the address of the property. When I buy properties, about 50% of the time I don't get my first tax bill because the city sent it to the previous owner. It's a hassle, obviously a breakdown somewhere in the administration. It's not really your problem, you could just throw the tax bill out, but you'd be doing a favour for the new owner if you sent the bill to him/her, so he/she doesn't have to call the city to get another copy.

Rec'd a letter from the IRS stating I owe taxes on a 1099-C, does mean I no longer owe lender this debt?

If a creditor has filed the 1099-C,does this mean the debt has been truly forgiven? The creditor can no longer collect on the debt by any means? I would appreciate any guidance!

You no longer owe the debt but you owe the taxes on it. And your credit is now so screwed up, creditor now know that you don't pay your debts.
You should check your credit with all 3 credit bureau, having bad credit is not a good thing, if you apply for a credit anywhere you interest rate will be 24% or higher.

Why do I owe taxes when I filed as single/1 ?

New postby Dian » 25 Oct 2012, 13:23

My wages were 48,067 and I owe almost $700 - why isn't my employer taking out enough?
I'm not saying its anyones fault - I just assumed that if I filed as single with 1 exemption that more than enough would be taken out.
I'm just looking for an explanation as to why this happened. I only had one job and no other income.
(And noone is claiming me as a dependent)

Did you have other income for the year besides your salary from your job? Multiple jobs during the year? Those are the common reasons. If you were claimed as a dependent you'd have come up short, although with that income you aren't likely a dependent.
