Where can I get low cost DNA testing to determine my racial heritage? What test should I do?

I know that my ancestry is mixed and I have no way to determine who my ancestors were by asking family members. I just want to find out what things I could be mixed with by doing DNA testing thats accurate and at a reasonable price that is not too expensive. I don`t know what test I should take.

You're looking for an ancestry test. That will give you percentages. The price varies. Just use google and put in dna testing. You'll come up with loads of sites. Just email some and see if they do the test and the cost. It is pricey.

I live in the United States. It doesnt have to be approximate if you are not exactly sure, but if you do have some knowledge an estimate would he helpful.

It depends on what kind of test you're talking about. Different tests cost different amounts. Some tests are easier to do than others; some tests are quicker to do or cost lest for the materials involved than others. These things are likely to influence the cost of having the test done.

Most diagnostic DNA tests are owned and marketed by different private companies. How much they cost often has to do with how much money they want to make. There is a large legal issue surrounding patents for such tests, or patents on the techniques and genes they involve which I could ramble on about but goes outside the scope of your question.

In short: the cost depends on what test you want to have done. If you can find out which company owns the rights to that test, you could probably do some research to find out the cost. Just asking your doctor about it would also be a good idea.

Edit: I also feel I should point out that, while a DNA test is always helpful, do not think that it is absolute. What I mean is this: if the test comes back positive for a particular allele associated with a certain disease (say, you have a test done for your risk of developing breast cancer, and the test confirms you have an allele of BRCA1 that is associated with an increased risk), this does not mean that you WILL develop that disease. Many people think that a DNA test is a "yes/no" test; in reality, whether or not you are going to develop that disease is not a binary outcome. Environmental factors, diet and exercise, and even a certain degree of luck, also come into play.

Edit Again: If you're talking about a DNA paternity test, then the price issue is a bit different. Paternity testing is not patented, so there are many different companies that will do them for you. Some companies are cheaper than others, and some give more reliable results than others. I think the talkshows like Maury get their tests done by DNA Diagnostics Centre (http://www.dnacenter.com/ ) though I dont know how cheap or reliable they are. Shop around a bit!

The only dna tests i know about in the UK are the ones that you have to pay for privately you buy them off the Internet,unless solicitors are involved and then they pay for them.
