How To Discover Family History Online For Free?

New postby Marguerite » 25 Oct 2012, 10:47

Is there any way to research family history online without any cost whatsoever? Any sites you could recommend my dads family which I'd like to research are from Ireland!

Hey Sezza,

You are getting some good advice. Once you get into your family history (genealogy), you may want to start spending money in the RIGHT places. But you have the right idea to start.

You should get everything you can from your parents first. Interview them for valuable clues. Here are some sites I like, sorry for repeating sites that others are giving.

Use GENFORUM to find your family SURNAMEs genealogy fourms, to talk to people doing similar research.

When you go to Cindy's list, do a search on IRISH. That will give you a filter on Irish sites.

Use puplic libraries in a town where you know someone died! Write to the librarian, or call them, and request an Obituary - that will be full of free information.

LDS FAMILYSEARCH.COM is really good information in all countries for your ancestors (not living). They have census, death, obit, and pedigree files. All free.

Less overhead cost? Credit cards charge the merchant a percentage of the sale. However, online transactions don't require the use of actual, physical machines to process credit cards. so the percentage would still take effect, but not the maintenance of the card readers.

No COSTCO in this area, but perhaps they have their own store credit card and are trying to drive sales of their own card.

Just a guess...

Normally when you apply for a credit card online. They usually give you instant approval whenever you are approved. If they cannot verify certain information they send you an email telling you that they will respond to you in 30 days. The only way of checking this information is if they gave you a confirmation number that you applied, then you could call the company to find out if you were approved. I think most credit card companies does not like to give this information on line.

I love paypal. Its simple and quick. YOu have an account set up and the money is put in your account. You don't need a bank account if you are receiving, however, I think they may ask for one. simpliest thing I've ever transacted and I've never had a problem. One thing to be wary of is spoofing or phishing with Paypal. They don't send that kind of stuff out, so if you get one, assume it isn't them.

have fun

Call ur discovery card customer service and explain it all to them, have them reset ur account and place a red flag on it, so u would have to have more then just a password to get in, also most likely u r on internet that is wireless....BAD! ppl can steal a lot of ur information when u are wireless. Ur info is out in the air..........once u press the enter button to send it, also ur IP Address is in the Air everytime u r on the internet, so everything on ur computer is accesable for any hackers to get in and look at all u have, documents and even pictures and last logins...........be very careful, also if u have a lap top and u are using At&t or any wireless services it can happen.

Are you sure you're willing to put money away for 5 years for only 5.5% or less a year? That's only 37% or less after 5 years!

You have $100K and you'd rather NOT buy some dirt cheap stocks or foreclosed homes? (no debt, OUTRIGHT PAID OFF). You don't need to do it today, you have any of the next 2-3 years to wait for worse forcelosures and lower prices.

How about some gold bricks? Just look at how much gold and silver have appreciated the past 5 years (even today, despite the market price low, you can't buy bullion unless you pay a good 20%+ premium).

I do not like stocks or houses, but I don't have more than 20K. If I did, I'd diversify it a few places and you certainly have a lot more chances to play what other people CANNOT today. You worked hard and saved up this chunk of money, seize the opportunity!

If you've misread the rules and were not aware of the minimum deposit $100K, let me know, I'll give you a few simple ways you can flip your money 10-20% realistically every year.
