What are the pros and cons of taking online college schooling?

Im looking into online college schooling, but im a bit skeptical. Can anyone tell me what are the pros and cons? If you have any idea of the best online university out there it would be very helpful.

Pro would be convenience.

Con would be you must be self motivated.

Another con would be the cost - online programs cost way more.

A possible pro -- see if a local community college offers online classes. You may be able to get a good chunk of those credits for a LOT less and still have the convenience of online.

A possible con -- even though many online colleges are accredited, many of those accrediting bodies are not respected by grad schools and hiring institutions. So you need to ask around in the field you want to enter to see if the school you want to attend has accreditation that is RESPECTED in the field. The school will tell you everything is great -- they want your money. But you don't want to spend all that money -- and it's ALOT -- only to find out your degree won't get you anywhere because no one will actually hire a grad from that school.

I need to find an online college school for pharmacy!?

New postby Malvina » 28 Oct 2012, 05:20

Does anybody know about a good online pharmacy school?
Many online colleges don't offer pharmacy but I found some online colleges offering pharmacy technician degrees.
The best one that I found so far is Penn Foster Career School.
Does anybody have any suggestion on where I can find a good online pharmacy degree. This would help alot. Thanks.

You can't get a pharmacy degree online. It's not a pharmacy degree either, its called PharmD "doctor of pharmacy" pretty much you are getting a doctors degree by going through pharmacy school which could take 4-5 years with 2-3 years of prerequisites. Penn foster career school is just for pharmacy technicians. I'm sure for pharmacy technician you could find SOME place that offers it online, but it is highly doubtful because most of the classes teach you how to do everything with hands on activities, like how to work in the pharmacy and some things can only be taught that way if you know what i mean. Take some time and look into schools near you that offer the technician program. good luck!

I am concidering attending college online. Does anyone...

New postby Caryn » 28 Oct 2012, 05:20

I am concidering attending college online. Does anyone have any advice on online education and online schools?

I never seem to be able to find enough time to work full time and attend college full time. I am 21 and really want to earn a degree to help accelerate my earnings. I have heard many different stories about attending online schools, such as they are not looked upon well by employers. The whole aspect of being able to work on school whenever I have time, not driving as much (killer Gas Prices), and being able to studying almost anywhere is attractive to me. What bothers me is not having the social experience that traditional college and university have. That is something I am willing to give up to be able to find time and earn a degree in Business and Finance. If anyone has any information on online schools or maybe just some advice on the subject please let me know. If someone out there has attended an online university, your advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks everyone =)

Where can I find rankings of college level schools of music online?

I've seen a few college websites quote their so called ranking like "one of top 20 music schools in the country", but I've actually found any rank lists on-line.
Also, I know Downbeat Magazine does rankings of Jazz programs, but I wasn't able to find them on thier website.
Thanks for any insight. Thanks.

US News does a list for graduate schools. I think you now have to pay to get that info, though. Last I knew, the rankings near the top were:

1University of Rochester–Eastman School of Music (NY)
2Indiana University–Bloomington
2Juilliard School (NY)
4University of Michigan–Ann Arbor
5Curtis Institute of Music (PA)
6New England Conservatory of Music (MA)
6Northwestern University (IL)
6Oberlin College Conservatory (OH)
6University of Cincinnati
6University of Illinois–Urbana-Champaign
6Yale University (CT)
12Florida State University
12Manhattan School of Music (NY)
12University of Southern California
15Johns Hopkins University–Peabody (MD)
15University of North Texas

This is not up-to-date, but it changes little from year to year. Bear in mind this is for GRADUATE programs, and is the overall rankings. Individual programs vary quite a bit. (UNT, where I teach, was number 1 in Jazz last time I checked, and only tied for 15th overall. Indiana, where I went to school, is number 1 in voice and opera, but tied for second overall.)

Also, these rankings are highly subjective, and based on REPUTATION, which may or may not reflect the actual merits of these programs. I am often asked by students and their parents, "What's the best music school?" My answer is always, "The queston should be, 'What's the best music school FOR ME."

Think about it.

You must be kidding, Man.
MIT brings you the experience that no online school could provide, if you want your brother to go to a school like that maybe you should ask him to apply to MIT or Standford, both are very selective school, and it is worth paying for forty thousand dollars a year for it. I would do it myself If I get in(not likely...) But do encourage him to do so!!
P.S Good Luck!!

I would recommend going to a traditional university...I think they are just more credible than online schools.

What does everyone think of online schools and degrees. What are some good online colleges?

I am looking into getting a criminal justice degree and have thought about signing up with Kaplan, an online school.

I am going for a graphic design degree at Mt. Sierra and love it. I have a BA already from an on campus school and I have had a better experience with the online classes. About.com has some great information on distance learning and I would highly recommend doing research first and asking a lot of questions. About.com has a great suggestion list of questions to ask an admissions representative. It helped me immensely and I am 100% convinced I made the right decision.

Good luck :-)
