What is better - 1 undergrad + masters or 2 undergrad degrees?

I have done 1 year of bachelor or business management (might switch to economics) and 1 year of bachelor of communication. Should I finish both undergraduate degrees, or should I finish one and do a postgraduate masters course in the other? What do you think will look better to prospective employers?

I've done some light research and a Masters degree is generally associated with not only with more responsibility in the workplace but also a larger salary (check first link).

If you get your undergraduate in communication and then go for your masters in business management, I think that would provide you with the greatest amount of opportunities. Also, receiving one undergraduate and a masters (instead of two undergraduates) includes more specialized education than an undergraduate course, which employers look favorably upon.

Can I do 2 undergrad degrees in the same major?

New postby Tiara » 29 Oct 2012, 15:26

Hi everyone,

I need some help with my 2nd degree and wanted to know if I can major in the same subject in my 2nd bachelor degree.

Just to let you know I majored in Bachelor of Tech in Applied Sciences and Engineering

Thanks for all your answers.

P.S.

I asked this same question 2 times before, but Yahoo Answers keeps deleting my questions. Don't know why, any help will be appreciated.

The short answer is no. Since you already have a degree in the subject, you would be better served getting a master's degree in engineering. A second bachelor's would be a waste of time and money (cost of degree + 4 years not in market). It should take about 2-3 years to earn a masters which would be much more beneficial in the job market than a second bachelor's degree. The extra benefit of a master's is that as an engineer you can often get a TA or Research Assistant position, so that going for your master's is much less expensive (or sometimes free depending on available funding).

Are online degrees just as accepted at graduate schools as are regular undergrad degrees?

I am curious as it pertains to graduate schools as well as employers. Do they view online degrees the same as a regular four year degree?

It depends on the school you attended. If it was not a reputable school then many grad schools - and most of the strong ones - will not accept that degree. Some (usually lower tier) will. Most won't. But if you did an online degree with a school that is highly reputable - which has a great rep for its brick and mortar campus - then yes, many grad schools will be okay with that. Some won't, but many will.

In addition, be aware of any accreditation requirements that schools in your field must have. Your undergrad school, at a minimum, should have been regionally accredited in order for it to be acceptable, but some fields also require that undergrad programs have had certain types of professional accreditation. For example, if you studied engineering with a school that was regionally accredited but did not have ABET accreditation for its engineering programs, you are sunk.

So, online degree from Carnegie Mellon? You're probably good. Online degree from U of Phoenix? Not so good.

What are some good undergrad degrees that dont require a masters?

If I wanted a good job out of college with a lot of opportunities without pursuing a masters, what majors/fields would you recommend? explain a little if you can.

I know lots of people with just a BA and an awesome job. A field specific masters degree will usually increase your pay, but lots of jobs just want a BA and often they don't even care what it is in.

Some suggestions-

Nursing- There is a huge nursing shortage right now. The field is pretty well paid and a masters really isn't necessary.

Engineering or Computer Science- Very in demand fields and very high paying, however these jobs are increasingly being outsourced.

Accounting- Normally people get an MBA a few years down the line, but there are many good paying jobs for people with a BA in Accounting.

Is getting concurrent Undergrad degrees extremely difficult?

New postby Melida » 29 Oct 2012, 15:27

And how long does it usually take?
by concurrent graduating with 2 different BA's at the same time.

Depends on the school. I go to Cornell and it's pretty much impossible to do unless you stay for five years or take an extremely ugly schedule from day one. (I have never met anyone here who is getting dual degrees) However, my friend goes to the University of Tampa, where it is extremely common to double or even triple major. good luck!

The only online undergrad degree I know of at a CSU is a B.S. in Human Development. I forgot which one it is at. I have never seen an online business degree offered at a Cal State.

However:

You can do a lot of major prep and general education online at your community college.

At my cc, I could have done almost the entire major prep for Business and much of the general education online then transfer to a Cal State. I wasn't a business major, but I looked at the business major while in cc.

SDSU has only a few online classes offered each semester. I have never seen more than 5 online courses offered in the schedule.

Temple and Howard come to mind. You can go to asha.org, which is the website for the American Speech Language Hearing Association. They have a list of all the accredited colleges and universities with CD programs.

Because salaries are market driven and doctorates in many fields are just not in demand
