What is the different between DSL and T1 Internet connection ?

What is the different between DSL and T1 internet connection ? Other than the speed, that T1 has faster speed than DSL.
What it has to do with the bandwidth? Why there is an explanation that the bandwidth on T1 are guaranteed and not on DSL.

DSL:
DSL or xDSL, is a family of technologies that provide digital data transmission over the wires of a local telephone network. DSL originally stood for Digital Subscriber Loop, although in recent years, many have adopted Digital Subscriber Line as a more marketing-friendly term for the most popular version of DSL, ADSL over UNE.

Typically, the download speed of DSL ranges from 128 kilobits per second (kbit/s) to 24,000 kbit/s depending on DSL technology and service level implemented. Upload speed is lower than download speed for Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line (ADSL) and equal to download speed for Symmetric Digital Subscriber Line (SDSL).

T1:
Digital signal 1 (DS1, also known as T1, sometimes "DS-1") is a T-carrier signaling scheme devised by Bell Labs.[1] DS1 is a widely used standard in telecommunications in North America and Japan to transmit voice and data between devices. E1 is used in place of T1 outside of North America and Japan. Technically, DS1 is the transmission protocol used over a physical T1 line; however, the terms "DS1" and "T1" are often used interchangeably.

A DS1 circuit is made up of twenty-four 8-bit channels (also known as timeslots and DS0's), each channel being a 64 kbit/s DS0 multiplexed pseudo-circuit. A DS1 is also a full-duplex circuit, meaning, in theory, the circuit can send 1.544 Mbit/s and receive 1.544 Mbit/s concurrently. A total of 1.536 Mbit/s of bandwidth is achieved by sampling each of the twenty-four 8-bit DS0's 8000 times per second. This sampling is referred to as 8-kHz sampling (See Pulse-code modulation). An additional 8 kbit/s is obtained from the placement of a framing bit, for a total of 1.544 Mbit/s, calculated as follows:

(8 bits/channel * 24 channels/frame + 1 framing bit) * 8000 frames/s = 1.544 Mbit/s

A T1 connection is a 24-channel circuit providing an internet connection straight from the providers backbone. This makes a T1 line a very stable and reliable broadband connection. The speed is generally around 1.5 MBPS. The cost is around 200-250 per month depending on the carrier. A T-1 line is generally good for a small business or 25-40 or so connections. Probably a bit more than you need into a home. A big advantage if you are maintaining a large graphics oriented web site, for instance, is that uploads and downloads generally run at the same speed.

Yes. Any home that is wired for two phones can be set up as T1. T1 does not require fiber optics. Rather, two Tips and two Rings are used for the T1 multiplexor (i.e. the equivlant of 28 phone lines).

This is a pretty standard setup for business. Your phone company will have a rate sheet for it.

Note: If you want to use a T3, T4, etc.... rate, then you'll need to have fiber optics running down your street and right up to your house.

I've a T1 internet connection and DLink524 Router...

New postby Hipolito » 05 Jun 2009, 01:01

I've a T1 internet connection and DLink524 Router that does not work together. Is this device compatible ?

My Wireless router used to work with a Cable modem. I subscribed to a T1 connection that my apartment complex provides. If I directly hook up to the ethernetport in the wall it works. However if I connect my Wireless router to the ethernet port and try to establish the connection thru my laptop that does not work.
Is it possible to have such a setup .ie have a wireless router without a Cable or DSL modem ?

My guess is your apartment's T1 is already going through a router in order to provide Ip addresses to all tenants, so yours is redundant- what IP address do you get when connecting your computer directly to the wall port? If it's a private IP, i.e. something in the 192.168.x.x or 10.10.x.x range, then there's already a router somewhere in the building- you might just need a simple 4-port hub or switch in your room instead of a router (simplest solution)

Or you could try resetting your router's IP address range to a different one from the apartment complex. So if they assign you an IP address in the 192.168.1.x range, make your router 10.10.10.1 so there's no conflict.
