Thankfully none of my family have been in need of it. Unfortunately a lot of people are in big need of the stem cell transplant. If the family didn't save it in a cord bank they then get pregnant to use the stem cells from the umbilical cord of the new baby to save the family member.
More people should be aware of it, and I even think that they (cord banks) shouldn't charge for saving it. It is something so important that we might all benefit from it one day. I don't see how people can think that it's unethical. More research should be allowed. I support it all the way!!!

Cord blood is the blood in the umbilical cord and after birth. It is taken after a live healthy birth only, when it is no longer a living part of mom or baby. There is no ethical issues with cord blood because it must be removed. If the umbilical cord is not shut, or the after birth not devlivered, it will actually cause massive problems.

Cord blood has been used to do several different things, But I used cord blood stem cells in my hematopoetic stem cell transplant (hematopoetic means blood... its a fancy term for a bone marrow transplant, but with a slightly broader meaning.) I had no matches in the marrow registry because I have a rare tissue type. Cord blood does not have to be matched as closesly as adult marrow or peripheral blood stem cells (a type of white blood cell in the circulating blood). And since I am an adult, I had to use 2 units of cord blood in my transplant (it is still in trials, I am a part of the clinical trials on this). One birth, one unit, which means I had two different donors for my transplant.
http://www.marrow.org is the National Marrow Donors Program which can give more info on stem cell transplants and the sources of stem cells used

Blood can be collected from the umbilical cord of a newborn baby shortly after birth. This blood is rich in cord blood stem cells that can be used to generate blood cells and cells of the immune system.

Blood stem cells can be used to treat a range of blood disorders and immune system conditions such as leukaemia and sickle cell anaemia.

Once collected, cord blood can be stored in a ‘cord blood bank’ for use as a potential source of tissue for transplant for that baby should it ever be required. As this blood originated from the person receiving it, there would be no problem with rejection of the transplanted tissue.

Alternatively, the cord blood may be donated to a general cord blood bank for use by other people in need of a transplant. It is hoped that over time, a store of cord blood samples from people of different tissue types may be established. Someone requiring a transplant would be treated with stem cells from the sample most closely matching their own tissue type, thus minimising complications associated with tissue rejection.

Embryonic Stem Cells vs. Umbilical Cord Stem Cells. Are you for or against one, the other, or both?

For the record: I'm for Umbilical Cord Stem Cells but against Embryonic Stem Cells.

This question will go into voting.

My life was saved by cord blood. I am a leukemia patient, and my stem cell transplant (the medically accurate term for a bone marrow transplant) was done last year using cord blood.

It is donated after a live healthy birth. There is no reason to be against cord blood unless you are against stem cells altogher for some unknown reason.

Embryonic.... given that they now can extract the cells without damaging the embryo, I dont see a problem. Beyond that, it is a fact that IVF and abortion are legal and that the by products of it get thrown in the trash. I would rather make these lives that no one wanted mean something. But, most people's problem is the fear of the possibility of human farming, or women being paid for their embryos or fetus.

You would need to talk to this person's doctors. They are the ones who can talk to you about whether or not there are any trials currently for this. Also, the cord blood would have to be a match to the person. With stem cell transplants (bone marrow transplant) it is matched by Human Leukocyte Antigen. I dont know if thats how it would be matched for kidney treatment or of it would be a blood match or dna match.
