Can nootropics aka smart drugs be combined with antidepressants like lexapro?

I have always experimented with cognitive enhancers during the school year and this summer was prescribed antidepressant lexapro as well as a balancer seroquel. Wondering how drugs such as piracetam, Aniracetam, Pramiracetam, L-Huperzine, Alpha GPC, Vinpocetine, Theanine, Acetyl-L-Carnitine, HYDERGINE, PEMOLINE, PRL-8-53, etc drugs like these be combined with prescribed medication.

Why not just ask your doctor to prescribe something for you for cognition. Then you do not have to worry about interactions with your disease state and your other medications if the doctor watches for interactions for you.

Combining weed and antidepressants?

New postby Toshia » 29 Oct 2012, 12:51

I was put on antidepressants a week ago. 37.5 mg of novo-venlafaxine XR for a week and I start today on75mg. I smoke weed sometimes. I did last night this morning. Is it alright to take this antidepressant and weed?

Don't do it. It's very silly to. You need to take the anti-depressant and not the weed. Weed won't help you feel better. Also don't drink any alcohol. It can make your symptoms worse. It reacts differently with each person. Don't let anyone tell you any different.

Just give a call to your doctor who prescribed the antidepressants. It's that easy. You can get a correct answer over the phone. You will also get a professional opinion on Hydroxycut.

Your second option is asking at a pharmacy if you're afraid of your doctor. But that's another place where you can get a correct answer.

There can be an interaction with the two drugs causing the seratonin to become too high or also it makes it hard for doctors to ascertain whether the prescribed antidepressants are at a therapeutic dose as they wouldn't know which of the two medications was causing the improvement in the condition

I wouldn't combine both of them, hydroxycut has strong effects in your body and they may be shocking with anti depressant meds. The product is really good and you can lose a lot of weight taking these meds, i am thin now thanks to it, never got the weight back!!!

Can I combine my antidepressant medication?

New postby Philip » 29 Oct 2012, 12:51

No, it's not as bad as it sounds. ;P

Well, I'm on 20 mg prozac right now, but I only have three days left. I need 5 extra days before my next psychiatrist visit. I still have a lot of 10mg prozac left so I'm wondering if I can just take two 10mg prozacs.

Does it work that way? two 10mg=20mg prozac

I don't want to call for a refill because I don't want to waste another $5 for extra medication(that I will only use 5 pills out of the whole bottle) when I just need to hold out for 5 more days. I don't have a job, my social anxiety makes it hard for me to get one. My parents don't support me and my "crazy pills" so I don't want to waste too much of their money on the medication. If I hold out for five days, I will have saved them $5. =D

So, can I take two 10mg to make it a 20mg prozac? or does it not work that way.
So I can. Thanks all. =]

Yes, you can ! i used to take it, it does work that way.

I hope your parents one day realized how depression and anxiety are real illnesses and not attitude problems and be more supportive morally and financially.

Has anybody ever combined Ritalin with an antidepressant?

New postby Caren » 29 Oct 2012, 12:51

Specifically, an SSRI (i.e. Paxil, Prozac, Lexapro, Zoloft, etc.).or any other antidepressant for that matter. Antidepressants don't work very well for me (especially SSRI's), partly because they usually make me lazy and unmotivated. SSRI's do, however, help with my depression. I was thinking that Ritalin.which I have a prescription for, would counteract these side effects as well as help my ADHD.

Talk to your psychiatrist about it- mental health meds are complicated enough with the help of a professional, so don't try to medicate on your own.

I've definitely been on similar combos before- they didn't cancel out each others side effects like I hoped they would. It actually started creating some really unpleasant side effects that neither drug had produced on its own.
Have you ever just taken the ritalin for a few months without any SSRIs? This ended up working really well for me. Though, in my case, the depression was very strongly linked to low self esteem caused directly by the ADD, so... once that was under control and I could build some confidence, the depression cleared up again.

Don't give up, and don't make any changes to your medications unless you've been on the current combo for a few months and you've consulted your prescriber.

Good luck!
