Eye Lazer Surgery

Should I get lazer eye surgery?

New postby Goldie » 28 Oct 2012, 07:56

Has anyone had lazer eye surgery and have an opinion about it? I'm so sick of my glasses and can't wear contacts.

It's costly, but getting more affordable.

You also need to consult with your eye doctor so they can measure your eyes, determine cornea thickness, look for anomalies like astigmatism. These measurements tell them if you are a good candidate for surgery. You will be monitored for a year after the operation to make sure the eye has healed.

Complications include, lessened tear production, dry eyes, infections, halo effects from bright lights. In some cases the corrected vision may not be enough and you would still need glasses. In rare cases the area that was removed with the laser grows back.

I had it done and my vision is good enough to see without corrective lenses, but my eyes no longer produce tears so I need to use eye drops every day to keep my eyes moist.

No, they do not put you to sleep during laser eye surgery. They give you eye drops before hand to numb the area, but they need you awake, so you can keep your eye still, and focused on one area. While you are sleeping, its possible (and very likely) that you will move your eye around, and if you do that during the procedure, it will likely damage your eye.

Well, I'd suggest just doing a basic search for laser refractive surgery. Wikipedia has several excellent articles that explain PRK and LASIK, which are the two most common laser surgeries. Keep in mind there are other types of lasers used for surgeries in the eye for health problems -- people with diabetic retinopathy, retinal detachments, and glaucoma also can have laser procedures done. (Look up photocoagulation and laser trabeculectomy/trabeculoplasty for more info.)
In any case, a laser is just a highly-collimated (parallel) beam of regular ol' light energy at a specific wavelength. LASIK uses an excimer laser; the other procedures use different lasers (YAG, for example) that operate at different wavelengths. In any case, it's the strength of the laser that is responsible for the tissue being blasted away.
You've got more research to do, but hopefully this is a helpful starting point.

Has anyone been relieved of migraines after lazer eye surgery?

I had lifelong migraines, averaging 60 to 70 per year but have had none since my lazer surgery 9 years ago

I am interested in the question. I have migraines, and I want to have lazer eye surgery.
