Is vision insurance like regular health insurance in that you may not be covered if you already have glasses?

It's hard to get health insurance if you have an existing problem. Is it also hard to get vision insurance like this?

I have never had vision insurance, but hope to get it soon. I am nearsighted in one eye and have astigmatism in the other, which are pretty common problems; but, even common problems make normal insurance difficult!

No.

vision insurance just spreads the cost of an annual eye exam and glasses/contacts out over the course of a years premiums. thats it. it doesnt matter whats wrong with your eyes. they wont even ask you whats wrong with your eyes when you apply. it doesnt matter.

so the answer is no...you cannot be "denied" a vision plan for a pre-existing vision problem. not that i've ever heard of anyway

Can you get Lasik without health/vision insurance?

New postby Stephanie » 28 Oct 2012, 10:56

I don't have health or vision insurance, but would like to get Lasik, and would be willing to pay the full amount.

Do these places offer some form of insurance to cover potential problems with the operation, since I'm uninsured?

Many Lasik providers will allow you to make payments should you choose to use their services. You will need to discuss any follow up care with them before you decide to use them.

Follow up care should be included in the initial cost of the procedure. At times you may need a minor adjustment to obtain the best results. When shopping around, make a list of questions, read on line about the procedure both benefits and problems with lasik. This way you make an informed decision. Use your judgment and their responses to gage if you want to use them or not.

Do not go with the first one, shop around ask people who have used their services. Your vision is way too important to take chances with. There are people who have had it done and it has changed their lives. Some have had many problems.

Should you have it done, DO WHAT YOU ARE TOLD TO DO ON YOUR PART! It can make the difference between success and a huge mistake.

Good luck!

Should the money I paid for health and vision insurance through my emplyer be included on my W2 form?

I received my W2 today and it did not include the money I paid towards insurance premiums through my job as wages earned throughout the year. It is still wages that I earned that is why i'm confused about this.

These benefits were probably in a "Pre-Tax" plan and that is why they are not included in your W2 Wages amount. This is common for most medium and large companies. It is correct.

Do you know any good independent health/vision/dental insurance companies in the Midwest USA?

In IL? Family Plans would be best.
Thanks!

If you are referring to the United States, there are no statutory requirements to provide insurance, it is a negotiated benefit of employment.

The real key for you will be to speak with a LOCAL and INDEPENDENT agent. It is vital that you get the quotes from someone who can give you quotes from many different companies. If you get quotes from a captive agent, they will try and sell you what is available to them, which is not necessarily what is the best for you.

The best way to get one if to fill out the form at this link, and someone who is local and independent will contact you. http://www.2insure4less.com/quote.asp?s ... yword+link

My vision health insurance won't pay for a new prescription. What should I do?

The vision care insurance I have through my employer allows for an exam and new prescription lenses (if necessary) every other year. I just used my benefit in April 2008 which means I won't be eligible again until April 2010. I had cataract surgery last week and need a new prescription. I contacted them today hoping that if there was a medical justification, they would allow it. I was informed that: 1) they discontinued their medical exception coverage on Jan. 1 this year and 2) if I needed new glasses before April next year, I would have to pay for them out-of-pocket. $$$$ since I need two pair - one for distance and one for computer use and reading. Is there anything I can do?

Well, since you've already asked them and they refused, I can't see that there's anything else you can do except pay for the glasses out of pocket.

Stay away from the fancy high-priced mall optical shops. (They have to make the money for that rent somewhere!) Find a local optician downtown and save yourself some money. You might check to see if they can put your new lenses into your existing frames and save even more.
