My engine service light comes on when fuel gets low, before my gas light does. I've cleaned and flushed injectors, but computer still says fuel is to lean, but only does it when fuel gets lower than 1/8 tank. If I keep it filled it won't come on. I'd like to know WHY it might do that. I know if I keep it filled it stays off, but at average of 3.50 a gallon that's not always possible. Any ideas why

You decided not to share what kind of car we're talking about so I'm only able to speak in generic terms.

A fairly common problem, and one that fit's your description, is that with age many electric in-tank fuel pumps begin to have trouble picking up the fuel as the level becomes lower. When this happens, your fuel injection system is working at less than optimal fuel pressure. Although the system can compensate for slight variances in pressure, if the pressure becomes too low, the injectors simply can't keep up.

When this happens it causes the engine to run at a leaner air/fuel mixture which will cause a diagnostic trouble code to be stored in the computer and turn on the check engine light. When you fill it up, or keep it above a certain level, the light will go off. You can ususally keep driving the car safely with this problem for some time, but... Normally the level of gas required in the tank to run correctly will creep up and up until you have to keep it above 3/4 tank. Just keep in mind that this is a good indication of your fuel pump getting ready to say goodbye. Better to get it fixed soon than to be stranded in the middle of nowhere.

P.S. You still use and spend as much for your gas no matter what you keep the tank level at. Fill it up once and then keep it above 1/4 tank. The cost will be exactly the same.
