When I applied for FAFSA there was no need for a cosigner. There were other qualifications such as a classes attempted versus classes completed ratio, and being enrolled in a college. My ratio was not desirable so I was unable to receive the FAFSA loan, which I greatly regret.

Student loans rarely have good interest rates and no fixed interest rates. So if you can, DO get the FAFSA loan of which there is NO interest rate! I borrowed 14,600 from Wells Fargo and by the time I'm done paying it off I will have paid them 47,000! Get FAFSA and all the Pell Grants that come along with them, that you never have to pay back. You will be sooo happy you did!

Good luck with school!

Apply for a student loan without a cosigner?

New postby Keturah » 24 Oct 2012, 19:12

I have a very good credit score and would like to apply for a student loan, but all the companies don't accept an international student without a cosigner. If I apply using my SSN pretrending being a citizen how the lender will find out I am not a citizen?

When they contact the university will they find out I am not a resident and cancel my application?

I wouldn't lie on a moan application if I were you. I would recommend finding a sponsor to co-sign for you.

In event of borrower's death what happens to a student loan with a cosigner?

If someone has a student loan and had a cosigner for it what happens if the borrower (Student) dies? Is the debt cancelled?

Depends if there is a clause in the contract. If not, the burden goes to the co-signer.

I think if i just dont pay it, the cosigner will have to pay the monthly payments. i dont wanna hurt my credit too much. is it that big a deal?

Nothing would be better for your credit than paying your loan. If you default on your loan you can expect to have bad credit for at least 10 years. In the current economic climate this is equivalent to a financial death sentence. If you're absolutely dead set against paying your loans, then don't pay. Whoever cosigned for you will have to pick it up. If they don't pay (or can't make the monthly payments on time) their credit will be messed up as well.

Any place I can get a student loan with a cosigner that will still accept me with my dad's bankruptcy?

My dad has a bankruptcy from about 5 years ago. I need a student loan through a private party (I.E. Astrive Student loan) but have been denied from Astrive twice in 2 years because of my dad's bankruptcy. Anyone know a place that will loan to me? I'm 20 with average credit for my age.

If you haven't applied for the government student loans you should do this first. They do not require a credit check or a cosigner. You can do this on line at http://www.fafsa.ed.gov. If you still need additional funding do a search for student loan lenders and just start checking with the lenders on their policies.

Are there any ways of getting a student loan without a cosigner if you are unemployed and a single mother?

I am already in nursing school at a school that hardly works with any loan program, so I would prefer a loan that does not associate with my school. I already have one of those!

If your income is low enough, yes there are plenty of ways. Federally subsidized student loans require no credit checks. The only requirements are that you meet income qualifications (LOW enough income, that is), that you aren't in default on student loans already, and that you're admitted to a college.

Thing to do is go to the college you want to attend (go to a PUBLIC university.. private universities are not going to be affordable merely on financial aid), apply for admission, and then tell the financial aid department you want everything.

Also, you need to fill out a FAFSA form. It is the holy scripture of financial aid, without it, you're not going to the ivy gates. http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/

Who is a good cosigner for a Student loan?

New postby Desire » 24 Oct 2012, 19:12

I am 22. Just got accepted to my dream college. I want to borrow 35,000 a year for two years, probably a private student loan.

I have no credit. My parents have bad credit.

I was thinking a Grandparent.but, does the cosigner still need to have an income? All of my Grandparents are retired.

Please send me suggestions! Thanks.

Also, any sites for loans would be great!

Your school should have some sort of help line that you can go to and see what you might be able to qualify for like a loan.

My sister inlaw got alot of financial help on her own through the school and she has no credit and her parents have bad credit. She also gets a monthly check to spend for books, gas allowence, ect.

Remember tho..if you use a family member as a co-signer and you fail to pay off your loan(s) then they will be held responsible. That could make for bad feelings in the family.

Good luck!

I'm assuming you're a student in the US.
If you haven't done it yet, start with the FAFSA http://www.FAFSA.ed.gov You'll have to do this for any financial aid.

Student loans like the Stafford and Perkins don't need cosigners. Only private loans require that.

Talk to the Financial Aid office where you're going to school. They get involved with all grants, scholarships, work study, and loans anyway so they'll know what's available.
