I was a Guidance Counselor at a private high school for two years. At that time, I was in the process of getting my Masters Degree from a Marriage Family Therapy program (MFT). I was hired knowing I was in the process of completing the masters program. So now I have a masters degree from a MFT program. A Pupil Personnel Program (PPS) program is also a good idea. That is a shorter program but will accompany your masters degree and make you the best candidate. To answer your question about the better degree, a masters degree is best in either counseling psychology or psychology. Just remember not to give up and be patient.

How can I become a guidance counselor without having a four-year degree?

Or rather, is it possible to become a counselor at a junior high or highschool without obtaining a Bachelor's in education? Is there any kind of certification I can receive as an alternative? Any information or other ideas will be appreciated.
I have an Associates degree, however, my field of study non-related to education.

Most states require you not only to have a teaching degree, but you have to teach for a required amount of time before you can go back for the counseling training. there are no short cuts for this job.

The general requirement used to be that a guidance counselor had to have earned a teaching degree and had classroom teaching experience. Not sure if that's still the trend.

General info about school counselors: http://www.schoolcounselor.org

General career info about counselors: http://www.bls.gov/oco and can search 'counselors', 'teachers' or such.

Actually, from what I've been told anyway, a degree in English would really help. If you're talking about guidance counseling for public schools they usually hire from within (typically English teachers who want to move on since counselors tend to get paid more).

And you will most likely need at least a Master's degree.
Hope this helps.

A Master's would probably be required. A Master's in school counseling would probably be preferred.

You probably need to be Illinois licensed or license-eligible as a psychologist, clinical social worker, counselor, or marriage and family therapist. All these require at least a Master's.

Go to http://www.idfpr.com/DPR/ to see all the crap the state of Illinois licenses and the requirements for each.

Also, a college in Chicago that offers Master's degrees in school counseling is Roosevelt University, located at:
http://www.roosevelt.edu/education/chs/school.htm

You need to know about college admissions, substance abuse counseling, and all kinds of stuff kids will need help with and a counseling/counseling psychology/school counseling degree probably best balances these issues.

First, you'll have to get a master's degree in school counseling.
Second, you can check this website
http://www.ets.org/portal/site/ets/menu ... f95190RCRD
to see what test you'll need to become a public school counselor in Georgia.
In my memory, it'll be The Praxis I® Test, and some states will also required The Praxis II® Test.

Your undergraduate major could be in any subject but you should perhaps choose something like Math, Biology, Spanish, English, or History because that is a good lead-in to teaching (see next). Another good option is Psychology because the degree you need will be very psychologically based.

Next, get your teaching license. In some states this is just taking a test, but in other states you have to do a certificate or master's to be qualified to teach. You should have some subject matter experience so you are qualified to teach a subject taught in high schools.

Then, after you have been teaching for a couple of years, you can pick up a Master's in Counseling (certificate in Guidance Counseling) at night and during the summers. Then, you can get a job as a guidence counselor.

I understand that in some state a few years of teaching is required and in others it is just preferred. But it is routine that guidance counselors have some classroom experience.
