I guess it is about time someone answered your question, so it might as well be me. Here goes ...
I wish I could recommend an actual inspector, but I don't live in your area. However, I have hired inspectors in the past and understand your concerns. Like you, I tend not to trust an inspector recommended by a Realtor.
Most good home imspectors belong to the "American Society of Home Inspectors" (ASHI). The society offers certification and training. While it is no guarantee that an inspector is competent, I would not hire one who was not ASHI certified. I figure that if an inspector has gone through the training and certification process, chances are pretty good he is qualified.

To find the ASHI certified inspectors in your area, just plug in your Zip Code and you will get a list of them. I would call several and get a phone quote for an inspection. I would also ask them how long they have been in the business and how long they have had their ASHI certification. I want an experienced inspector, and wouldn't hire someone brand new to the business.
