Depends on the school. In my school, Math Comp. was a gen. ed. class. I didn't end up having to take it because of my ACT scores and GPA in high school.

As part of my major, I had to take:
Methods of Teaching Math 1
Methods of Teaching Math 2
The Nature of Mathematics (Intuitive Geometry)
Mathematics for Elementary Teachers

How do online college math courses work?

New postby Dorie » 28 Nov 2009, 18:10

I have taken online classes before and done very well; but, none of them were math. I was mostly graded on papers I wrote which will not work with math. How do you get tested with online math classes? (not the kind where you have to go to the campus for testing) Do you get credit for your work even if you get an answer wrong and how would they see the work?

I took Math 115 (Mathematical models) on line last semester. We had certain homework questions to do each week out of the book and then we had the test on line about once a week. The test was set up where you saw the question and had a space to type your answer and work into. We also had a discussion board where we had to communicate with the other classmates via typing at least three times a week. For question on the homework we had a QAC discussion board which stood for questions, comments and answers which my teacher checked regularly to see if anyone needed help. We also had the option to email our teacher with any questions that we had. Everything was done strictly on the internet and the only time that I had to drive to campus was for the final exam at the end of the semester.

What type of calculator will I need for college math courses?

I have a ti-84 plus. Will that suffice, or will I need a ti-89 or ti-92?

The TI-84 should be fine. I was a math MAJOR, and I got by fine on a TI-83. In fact, I didn't even switch to that until after a few years of still using my (non-graphing) $12 Radio Shack scientific calculator. And even then, I was mostly using the TI-83 for solving matricies just to make it easier to correct Linear Algebra tests when I was a TA.

Can someone recommed the best calculator for me to buy...

New postby Tamala » 28 Nov 2009, 18:10

Can someone recommed the best calculator for me to buy that will work for all my college math courses?

I am currently taking Algebra and need to buy a calculator for class. The instructor said that the lower end TI36 would work for the class. However, I will be taking Pre-Calculus soon. I will also be taking Business Calculus and Business Statistics 1&2 as well as other accounting and finance courses. Could someone recommended a model of graphing calculator that would best meet the needs for all these classes? I would like to go ahead and get one now at the start of all my math courses rather than buy new calculators as my courses progress, if possible.

Thanks!
Tamala
